Poem "As I Sit Here" by Glenda Sichky

As I sat in the back of the room
The hope for a new beginning did loam
Watching my brothers work to build our band
With the help of another nation of this land

United not only by treaty but also in love
We met by the grace of the great spirit above
A nation united is what we should be
And stand proud for the whole world to see

The blood of our ancestors runs very deep
For centuries and years the heritage did sleep
But now we have awaken to take our space
And we will not be silenced or put in our place

So as I sit here my heart soars high
As we give thanks to the Great Spirit in the sky
To my brothers and sisters who are joined here today
May the Great Spirit be with you in every way
